Raga Chikitsa or Raga Therapy is a branch of music therapy that uses Raga, a melodic framework for improvisation akin to melodic practices in the Indian classical music, for holistic healing. Certain Ragas are used for stimulation, while others for relaxation. Ragas usually have a preferred Rasa or a mood associated with it, such as “Shanta” (Peace), “Shringara” (Love), or “Veera” (Courage). In addition to this, certain times are prescribed for every Raga to be heard for maximum benefit, based on how stimulatory they are. Based on the study of the impact that Ragas have on various health conditions, researchers like Dr. TV Sairam, have prescribed the use of certain Raga for certain ailments.
Raga Bhairavi is an Early Morning Raga and promotes both a mild stimulation as well as relaxation – producing a relaxed yet alert state, that is conducive for kick-starting a day with freshness, energy, and peace of mind. This particular Raga is often prescribed for sinus problems, sluggish bowels, rheumatoid arthritis and other Kapha dosha ailments. It is ideal for meditation, working on creative projects, getting rid of early morning sluggishness etc. Its mood-boosting properties can help with depression, low self esteem, codependency and lack of self-compassion and poor interpersonal boundaries.
